Suhaag

Suhaag

Emotion: Joyful

Setting: A village girl hears about her dream boy (future husband) for the first time

Interpretation: A woman gets a young girl excited about a boy who is “haan da,” very compatible in every way for a prospective wedding match.

Significance of performing this song: Women enjoy singing these songs together in Fresno every year at the teean da mela festival.  While singing, they are immersed in their nostalgic memories of their youths in Punjab dreaming about the boy they would marry.  Women experience the freedom and joy they felt as young women in Punjab before they moved to America and assumed adult responsibilities.

Gurmukhi Translation:

Aaondi kuriye, jaandi kuriye, bhar liya glass kachi lassi da ni
Tere haan da, tere haan da patiala munda dasi da ni
Aondi kuriye, jaandi kuriye, chak liya tokra nadiyan da
Kithe lahengi, kithe lahengi eh sara pind chhadiyan da
Aaondi kuriye, jaandi kuriye, chak liya bazaar vicho chhape
Ni aaja dheeyay sardal te, tel cho ni aaye tere maape
